Reminiscing Love

I went through loves of the past
Through the memories in a box
I take them out when I want to remember you
When I want to shed some tears.

You’ve added something to me
A facet to my personality.
You gave me bliss and joy
Made me feel good
For a while.

Taught me a lesson, too
A valuable one:
Love’s not forever
The one who says he loves you
Will leave you
Disappear
Walk out on you.

My heart grew tougher, harder
I shed my naivete like a snake its skin
Took on some sense and reason
Built a fence.

I love again
With no illusions
It’s ephemeral but I want.
My love will last and so will yours
But we won’t be forever.
