The smells of life

I've been downtown for the first time in a while today and what surprised me the most when climbing up from the underground were the smells. The smell of cheap sweet perfume, burnt fries, cigarette smoke. Smells I don't have in the protective little bubble I call my flat, smells I got unused to.

Some smells of the past I won't forget .. first boyfriend's after shave that I felt lingering all over my small town after the forced break up .. the familiar odour of every McDonald's that makes me slightly queasy after two university vacations spent working there .. burning incense that evokes mornings in Bangalore.

What is it about smells that engraves them in the sensory part ouf our memory? And which ones are saved for you?
